The reason the NPC meme is so upsetting to these people is that it completely contradicts the essential conception of elevated self-worth they hold.
They earnestly believe that their politics and actions reflect their moral goodness and, therefore, their social superiority, but also that their convictions are a reflection of their inherent uniqueness. Like teenagers in every generation since the mid-20th century, they believe that their banal and facile pronouncements are insightful, original and unique. The NPC meme cuts deep for these people not because it says that one is not human; not because it "dehumanises" people, but because, rather, it says that one is a mouthpiece for the dominant ideology in society. It says: "You are not original. You are not special. You are not insightful. You think you are, but in fact you sound like everyone else. You think you are your own special shade of colour but you are a dull, grey blank." The people it offends have a conception of the self that is completely dependent on their sense of authenticity and the moral and social capital this entails. In other words, they are like high school kids. The last thing a cool teenager wants to be told is that they're not original. The last thing these people want to be is "like everyone else" - specifically, the same as the dominant majority. They're a minority, a cool minority - edgy, unique, striking out against the forces of the tyrannical majority (Fuck you, Dad!). The NPC meme compels them to regard the true nature of their status in social relations. This is why it incenses them. Because they are narcissists.
