Gospel Reading and Reflection

GOSPEL - Luke 6:1-10
On a sabbath, while Jesus was going through the grainfields, his disciples plucked and ate some ears of grain, rubbing them in their hands. 2 But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the sabbath?” 3 And Jesus answered, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4 how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?” 5 And he said to them, “The Son of man is lord of the sabbath.” 6 On another sabbath, when he entered the synagogue and taught, a man was there whose right hand was withered. 7 And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the sabbath, so that they might find an accusation against him. 8 But he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man who had the withered hand, “Come and stand here.” And he rose and stood there. 9 And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful on the sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?” 10 And he looked around on them all, and said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored.

Glory to Jesus Christ!

The second episode in today’s gospel gives us a hint at how Jesus wants us to understand the Sabbath. He brings the man with the withered hand to everyone’s attention in the synagogue and asks whether he “it is lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it.” In other words, he is asking whether the Sabbath can be understood as an opportunity for him, and for all humans, to participate in God’s creation. After all, the basis for the Sabbath was the conclusion and rest at the end of the six days of creation. The 10 commandments reiterated this by pointing to the creation of the world as a justification for the Sabbath as a day free from work. But does this commandment mean that the work of creation, and of sustaining and restoring creation that is implied in a healing, must stop for 24 hours? Jesus’ answer is a definitive “No”. Jesus never rejects the Sabbath as an institution, but he never starts arguments about it either - the debates about the Sabbath in the gospels are always started by his opponents. Instead, Jesus points us to an understanding of the Sabbath with creation before the fall, and the recreation of humanity after the fall, as its underlying meaning. The Sabbath is a remedy to possessiveness and greed, but it never acts as an obstacle in the way of God’s life-giving grace. In the healing of that man, the Sabbath is truly fulfilled.

what's this all about?

Thank you OP, good thread.
Have a good quote here:
Come, now, you rich men, weep and wail over the miseries that are coming upon you. Your riches have rotted, and your clothing has become moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have rusted away, and their rust will be a witness against you and will consume your flesh. What you have stored up will be like a fire in the last days. Look! The wages you have withheld from the workers who harvested your fields keep crying out, and the cries for help of the reapers have reached the ears of Jehovah of armies. You have lived in luxury and for self-gratification on the earth. You have fattened your hearts on the day of slaughter.
