I didn't think much of him until I read a book called "Ghengis Khan and the making of the modern world", and now I believe that he is possibly one of the greatest men to have ever lived.
He came from poverty beyond compare, beyond anything that any living human can know, and he marshaled the scattered tribes of the steppes and marched upon civilizations that had used his ancestral lands as a free-range slave farm.
And he fucking smashed them. Obliterated everybody who would not bend the knee and submit to his laws.
He was a true revolutionary. He would deliberately kill all aristocracy and promote based on merit.
But the thing that really makes him stand out to me is how focused he was, and ultimately how selfless he was towards his ideals.
He had hundreds of castles and fortresses and cities, but he spent most of his time living in a yurt on campaign.
He is probably one of if not the richest men who has ever lived, but he kept no gold for himself, he cared nothing for it, he passed it on to his army, widows and orphans first, and to his empire.
He died in his yurt during the fall of a great city before his horde, he likely died from injuries sustained in battle, he was an old man when he died, the greatest and most powerful king of all kings that every region he touched had ever known still personally participated in war by choice.
He was never a figurehead, no matter how powerful he got, he remained a true soldier.
And his wishes were to be buried simply, in private.
