They struggle to attract enough applicants. I get emails from them regularly asking to refer people, and they post signs all over town.

No no no absolutely not. And to anyone who says they know 'everything'. They are full of shit. It changes every 2-4 years, you gotta get re-certed. But, as far as A+ (building computers) I taught myself that 'accidently' when I was like 12. Everytime an upgrade came out that I wanted, I had to learn how to put it in and install it. There were no computer techs (at least affordable) yet. Then, got hurt, wanted to learn something new (gotta keep your mind going or you'll go crazy when stuck in the house) taught myself Net+. It was supposed to be an 18 month course, but I was interested...and got it done in 3. Linux, is pretty much just operating out of cmd. HTML and CSS for fun as well. In the end, it doesn't matter what I know or could even learn. I have a record. And until that's fixed completely, there are no jobs for ppl with a record...ESPECIALLY in this industry
nah not true. its always up to the employer. if they need the skills and the skills are in demand it doesnt matter. i know a guy from high school with a felony theft who works for the national institutes of health in washington dc. because hes good at what he does. coding and troubleshooting.
sounds exactly like contracting jobs i had dont overseas. its really not as bad as you make it out to be. it helps build a resume as someone whos decent worker. i started off 22/hr a decade ago and now in a cushy 30-39/hr (depending on which site im at in the week) and its been an easy stable gig.

It’s cool, I highly recommend getting into an oilfield tech position. They pay well and have unlimited hours if you desire. most systems we deal with in particular are navigated with fairly basic terminal emulators or by typing in an IP address.
