According to UN treaties, refugees have to be settled in the first stable country they encounter. So, if they are allowed to enter Mexico, then Mexico has to keep them. If Mexico allows them to travel on to our border, then Mexico is breaking treaties and is definitely not our friend.

It's pretty hard to make the case that your reason for immigrating to the US is to flee violence and persecution in your home country when you passed through numerous other politically stable countries on the way and didn't bother claiming asylum in any of them. They are economic migrants, not refugees. It sucks that they're from poor countries, but they don't have valid asylum claims in the US.

The best thing that can be done is to convince Mexico to stop the caravan, which is what Trump is doing. Unfortunately we can’t stop them on our own because once they reach the US-Mexico border and claim asylum, we have to let them in and waste money on them.
