Let's say for a second that two mulattos have a kid. What race is that kid? You can't say he's mixed because he isn't mixed. Both of his parents look the same. At that point the kid is cast out into society and society decides his worth. The white kids don't like him because he looks different. The black kids are usually in such a small minority that they are forced to except him as he has their blood. The end result is the kid identifying as African american.
If the opposite were to happen and we were in Nigeria, and their were like 3 white kids at a school and 1 mulatto. I would bet money that the mulatto would join the white kids.
