Enlightenment ideology describes humans as being selfish, seeking to maximize their self-interest by all means rational. This perspective was formalized in GAME THEORY, the science of strategy. Game-theoretical frameworks are behind many modern models of human behavior used to describe economics, social media phenomenon, and advertising. By virtue of self-fulfilling prophecy we have made the modern world a game, an omnipresent competition between human beings. This ideology is followed closely by rightist thought, which describes the world in terms of winners and losers. The NPC meme is a projection of how Jow Forums rightists see the world: in terms of a game, with them among the players.
But what about a different way of looking at the world, not as eternal struggle and competition, but a mutualistic and co-creative process of shared lives and shared meanings? What matters isn't what advantage you can gain over others, but what we can create together on shared terms. The entire purpose of an economy is to facilitate our shared lives, not the other way around. The only way to beat the game is to stop playing it. Only by having shared interests and lives as our central premise can compromise and democracy flourish, the culture of winning at all costs is toxic to democracy.
I want what's best for everyone, a society where all can flourish despite creed, race, sex, or anything else. I want what's best for you user, but it isn't up to me to dictate what this is; only by having this as a foundational premise can reason and debate function to guide both of us towards this shared goal.

What you fail to realize is that those who do not see life as a game will be dominated by those that do. Social structures have hierarchies and competition is a very real thing. It's not a self-fulfilling prophecy, concepts like game theory were developed because we realized human beings behave as if they were playing a game to begin with.

Except that most people don't actually behave according to the dictates of game theory. This is described as people not being "rational," but the entire premise of what rationality is and what it is for (the accumulation of power and wealth, namely) is irrational.
