"The probe into allegations of improper burials of infants has been widened to cover multiple funeral homes in metro Detroit, with a number of state agencies joining Detroit Police. At a news conference Friday, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said that DPD had held a meeting with representatives from the FBI, Michigan State Police, Wayne County prosecutors, the Michigan Attorney General's Office and the state licensing authority. "We’re looking forward to our continued collaboration with our federal and state partners on this, because this will be a wide probe," Craig said."

A Detroit funeral home in Barksdale was closed in January after state inspectors found blood-stained equipment and rat-infested remains. A Petoskey funeral home was closed in March after a rusty machete was found in the embalming room, embalmed bodies were left in an un-refrigerated garage and human cremated remains were found kept with a pet dog and pig. The Jarzembowski Funeral Home in Detroit was shut down in 2017 after improperly handling about $200,000 from 43 pre-paid contracts The Swanson Funeral Home in Flint was hit with disciplinary action from the state in 2016 after decomposing bodies were found in their garage. O'Neil Swanson III was also charged with 10 felony counts of funeral contracts conversion in June."
