Lenin only went to Russia after the revolution started. Russia was already falling apart due to the war, and the Germans thought that allowing Lenin safe passage from Switzerland to Russia would cause more trouble and thus permanently knock Russia out of the fight. It is true that the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk ended hostilities between Germany and Russia, but I personally doubt that that result required Lenin.
