The reason why it was so well documented was because of Hitlers retribution policy. 1 dead soldier = 100 dead civilians, 1 injured = 50. Germans who conducted these crimes had to keep exact record of how many people were killed because it was all calculated with a formula. The incident that lead to this left 10 dead Germans and 26 wounded = 2300 civilians to be killed total. With those Serbs jews and roma people were rounded up as well a total of 472 of them by Germans sources. Most historians agree to this number +-20 victims. 31 mass graves were found rounding up most of the victims. Apart from that this wasn't some isolated incident people found up a decade later, almost 3000 people were taken out of their homes and killed in one day in a major city. It was well recorded by both sides there are also many poems, documentaries and art pieces made in memory of the victims of the massacre

Srebrnica was a rebel enclave, rebels would conduct attacks in nearby villages and then retreat to the safety of UN enclave.
