Einstein was very proud. To understand why you need to understand his psyche and the first years his adult life. Einstein had always performed badly in school, and frequently butted his head against authority. He was frequently mocked by teachers and peers because he was an airhead, and very deficient in mathematics. After school he was jobless for a long time. His first real job was at being the lowest clerk at a Patent bureau, and even then he got in by corruption.

One does not come out of those formative years without disastrous consequences.
