Honestly I feel like that's a facade that Buddhism has. It makes the least sense. Other religions have logical/ontological starting point, God. Buddhism has the notion Dharmakaya, similar to Godhead, but no God. Central to most forms is emptiness, the concept that all essences only appear to exist because they don't really. This seems much more nonsensical to most people than the concept of a starting point and an essence to all things.
