I'd say President Trump being a major talking point in most media platforms being a good reason. If one (or collectives) keeps blasting (mostly negative) news about him, that's all there is to talk about for these folks. Most only talk about weather and news/politics if not about themselves. I guess you can call them NPCs. It's not entirely outlandish to be shallow as heck. that's the majority of people on this planet, unironically.
