It's not about the US producing enough to meet its needs. It's about the specific currency that the oil is priced in. The US also lifted its 40 year ban on exporting crude oil -- it's not going towards self-sufficiency. Alternatives should be pursued in all possible avenues.

Petrodollar is a meme. All oil sales in the world are less than $2 trillion a year. US GDP is ~ $20 trillion a year. The value of US currency is not dependent on it being used to transact in oil. Even if everyone stopped using the dollar for oil all at once it wouldn't have a long term negative effect on the value of the dollar because all that money would be invested in value-creating ways, growing the economy the dollar is used within.
