This is what is happening right now. A meaningless lifestyle based on comfort and escapism. If we were to become a society like1984 it would brazen and blatant, in Brave New World it would be a slippery slope.

1984 is quite generic in terms of the type of totalitarianism/authoritarianism is represents with a strongman leader, cult of personality around him, mass surveillance, censorship, etc.
While some elements of 1984 fit into the modern day, it is far closer to the world described in Brave New World.
