Having a bicameral system was important and remains important for two reasons. Firstly it was what allows various states to subject themselves to the will if other states. Secondly, its the only thing preventing the disintegration of the Union.

Two houses were established. One with a proportional representation based on population. This is the House of representatives. Here the will of larger states with more representatives have more voice and can in fact impose thier will over less populous states. In order to balance out that pressure that would cause smaller states to say "fuck you guys we are leaving" a second house was established where all states have equal voice. A legislation has to meet with the majority of the People representatives AND a majority of the States representatives. This has the effect of moderating the flow of progress to levels that are sustainable and reasonable while at the same time making sure deliberate procedural consensus is built by a majority of stake holders. Thus that when legislation is finally passed it is not easily or rapidly overturned by each new legislative body which would result in chaos and erode faith in the body and the process. If a law passes with the approval of the majority of the peoples proportional representatives and a majority of the states representatives it will likely be something that can stand on a broad base of support at various levels and bases of society.

We have an equality if all peoples voices in one house and an equality of all states in another. This is only one small aspect if the brilliant system of checks and balances that were conceived and implemented for very important reasons. Please read the Federalist Papers for more info. Abandoning this system would lead to rapid disintegration of the United States. Anyone calling for us to abandon this brilliant and nearly unparalleled system of stability and consensus rule is only trying to achieve one thing. Destruction of the U.S.

The United States Congress is a bicameral legislative body by design - it has two houses:
