Sparta was a gynocentric paradise where women had a huge amount of societal power and leverage over their husbands (alimony, property entitlements in divorce etc) and literal cuckoldry was encouraged. Yet they never got beyond being a poor, primitive, agrarian society in a constant state of warfare and on the verge of collapse. The Athenians on the other hand were the most advanced and enlightened of all the city states and they kept their women on a tight leash.
I don't think it's a coincidence that given too much power in a society women will degenerate and run it into the ground.
