Land owners rights are protected by the electoral college. If we used the popular vote instead, the rural parts of the country would be fucked over. Its not a perfect system but it has its merits.

We do exactly the same thing on our referendums. You can win the referendum vote with 3 million votes but as long as you don't also win the majority of cantons it won't pass. Even a draw counts as "not winning the majority, therefore it's canned".

State's rights yo. Imagine there are 2 states with identical population (and therefore electoral college votes). State A voted 99% red and 1% blue; State B voted 51% blue to 49% red. The red candidate got more popular votes, but both candidates received the same amount of electoral college votes. The only way to fix this is to go to a somewhat parliamentary system, and I'd be OK with that, but many states would not.

The only thing I have against the electoral college is that the college itself isn't necessarily bound by their constituencies. They can vote one way or the other without repercussions.

The electoral collage is there to prevent states with large populations from simply raping the smaller states. The biggest problem with it is that nearly all states are winner take all.
