As a nation, we might could stand on our own, but it would be neither an easy transition nor an easy ongoing task. Especially for trade and diversification, I'd think we would much prefer to be with a group of other states. Appalachia will make the biggest push to truly separate the Midwest from the Northeast by establishing a dividing line on the southern banks of the Erie. I imagine Canada might be sympathetic to the northern forces and so we will need to be clear in our thread to separate the north-east from the Midwest even if a partial invasion of Canadian territory and temporary domination is necessary. They may offer them greater degrees of support to which we can make threats of Canadian territory being annexed upon the consolidating of the northern territories.

That's because that regions population is disproportionately made up of older people and in the country a lot of them have come out there to buy cheap property. The younger generations, being as poor as they are, are far more inclined towards a radical politics and these are the people we are talking about in the scenario. Creating an autarky is natural for Appalachia given that coal mining was the only real industry to ever permeate the region and with its leaving, the people will need to create new structures in order to sustain themselves.

We could encourage the consolidation of the African American population within this African free state. All of the blacks from around the country could be relocated to this region eventually and allowed to form a government of their own what should hopefully entice more and more African Americans outside of that state to migrate there. I genuinely think they can do well when they aren't disadvantage by poverty and systemic problems and it would be a really good example of how America can rebuild itself in a far stronger and more united way if we can also uplift them. Economic syndicates and local autarkys can help form that.

As a Missourianon, I find it amusing that basically all non-coastal regions lay claim to Missouri in the event of balkanization.
Truth be told, Missouri would most likely become a crossroads between the various Fly-Over Coalitions. Even Northern Missourians have a lot of Dixie sympathies, but by the same token South Missourians have a lot of respect for the way Northern Mid-West states do many things. STL is considered the last Eastern City, and KC is consider the first Western City. Honestly, in a SHTF scenario, Fly-Over peoples have more in common than they have in difference. That doesn't mean they wouldn't balkanize, but I definitely see a large amount of trade and strategic aid going on. I think Missouri is both geographically and culturally ideal to facilitate these relationships. Perhaps more importantly, I think we're stubborn and cheeky enough to not just become the Mid-West's pivot man cock-whore, or else just become micro-balkanized ourself. You don't see a lot of people acting balls-out about being from Missouri, but that's not really our style. We all know what's up, and if you don't it's your loss. Missourians have a recognizable attitude and outlook in common with only minor regional variations. I think we'd stay together and do our part to help keep all our more excitable neighbors behaving neighborly.
