An electronic detonator works because you pass a current from one wire, through the explosive material (sparking), and into the second wire. The gap needs to be very small or else the explosive material actually acts as an insulator, preventing an explosion. Having wires at both ends suggests that you're trying to create a spark through the entire length of the bomb, which doesn't work unless you have a retardedly massive current from a huge attached power source.
