For instance a Free market economy can greatly benefit from immigrants at most levels, as the job market wont be affected by immigrants. It doesn't matter who you pay for as long as they have a good work ethic.

In a welfare state however, immigration could inherently hinder the economy. Seeing how minimum wage is usually, aside from nordic countries, a staple of a welfare state, immigrants have the advantage of working for less and businesses will look for them more often. Illegals in a progressive society will also be looking for ways to obtain welfare itself without paying the taxes that would fuel the welfare itself.
One could say 'well, the government could always update it so that they will have to pay' but one also realize that a welfare state requires a lot of bureaucracy to work and they will always be lagging behind.

In anything but a free market economy, immigration has the potential to do more harm to the economy than good.

A market will either bare the increased cost of labor, turn to automation, or cease to exist because demand was too low meaning it wasn't essential or wanted enough to the degree that it was economically viable.
