I vaguely remember hearing about how chariot racing teams during the Byzantine empire sorta represented different political factions. I don't know why, but it just seemed really odd to me. I suppose the modern equivalent would be like if there was an (American) football league in America where different political parties (or maybe even different ideological groups within political parties) would each send in teams to play against each other.

I read about that in the decline and fall of the roman empire, there were 4 teams with different colors. Their fans wore their team's colors and sometimes rioted and killed the opposing teams fans. The emperor wore the colors of his favorite team. Some things never change.

Yes.
There were originally four teams, which were basically pep squad and Official Fan Club combined and a charioteer would sign with one of the teams to get endorsements. Eventually two teams fell so far that they disbanded and that left the Greens and Blues. They were responsible for such lovely things as the Nika Riots and a lot of Iconoclasm after (I think) Constantine 6 endorsed Iconoclasm and asked them to do his dirty work.
