My reluctant answer is that the divide is less between "blue" states and "red" states, than it is between cities and the countryside. Even if none of us were patriotic, it would be infeasible to govern a country consisting of cities scattered across the land. And rural areas would starve without the tax money contributed by cities. So, no, I don't see how left-wing secession benefits anyone.

Yes it is. Secessionism isn't a simply a "state-from-country" thing. Political lines can be drawn anywhere - they're just political lines. They get redrawn all the time all around the world, not least in the U.S. with congressional districts all the time and without any violence whatsoever.

Lichtenstein gets along pretty well as a political unit, and it's significantly smaller than most cities in the U.S.
It's not like small political units can't exist. It's just that states tend to expand themselves and consolidate because that's where the incentives of a political class lie - in expanding their business and influence.

As much as I hate the cities, they do possess critical modern infrastructure highly difficult and expensive to replicate.

They would develop their own media and financial services, and since the factories, mines and farms which produce actual value are in those regions they'd be able to fund further expansion of infrastructure.
