On a related note, my liberal as fuck sister in law was up visiting. We've argued over political shit in the past. My wife is pregnant and she got one of those early blood test screenings that checks for a number of defects and also tells you the gender of the child earlier than you will typically get to tell via ultrasound. Anyway, my sister in law who is heavily in favor of abortion asks my wife why she would want that screening. My wife says "well...so we know as early as possible whether or not the kid has a massive defect or down syndrome". Her sister starts asking her shit like "why? you wouldn't terminate the pregnancy just because the kid has a disability would you?" and "I can't believe you would consider that..."

My wife is against abortion with the exception of kids who are deformed or disabled since she feels it ruins the quality of life to the point where they ought not exist. Healthy humans she's all in favor of protecting. Anyway I cut in and said to my sister in law "you're in favor of laws that allow a woman to kill a healthy baby in the womb for her own convenience, how is it any worse to terminate defective offspring?"

I know all about that, my family is heavily involved in a pretty prominent nonprofit for autistic people, and I have multiple relatives with autism. The amount of round the clock care for a lot of the people in that program as well as the cost is unfathomable to many. It will literally destroy everyone in your family's lives and the person in question will be miserable with existence to begin with. You see all sorts of things on TV about people who pretend they're super duper happy and blessed to have a defective child, but the reality they don't show behind the scenes is bleak.

I had this talk with my wife a long time ago when she was firmly against abortion in all forms.
