Oh, they made people pay for it. Mid 30's here, but they were willing to give me 100$s off the test, as I was poor. Friend said his test was 175$. He got sent back to normal classes after a few years. Did meet one kid who skipped 2 grades and would leave school for weeks at a time to go to" science camps". I've heard different stories depending on the locale, but it seemed to be by invite at the start of the year depending last years end of year tests. And people were made to pay for this test.

I was in GATE to, in San Diego. It was a very strange program, kind of backfired on me. Thought I was to smart after receiving all that recognition and stopped trying to excel, ended getting Fs the following year after being accepted, ended up dropping out and doing school like how my dad did, getting a GED

I was tested for that in elementary school without even knowing what it really was and wasn't accepted, yet I was much smarter (and more talented) than the kids who were in it. They seemed like they were just the straight-A students. Meanwhile, I'm basically a one man production team, making movies, making music, etc. Those GT kids grew up to be total normies.

GATE required a score of 1 standard deviation above average on an IQ test. It wasn't for retards - it was to foster creativity in students with potential.

i wasn't forced. every one in the school took the "C.A.T.S." test and i don't know how the selection worked, but i scored in when i was in first grade.
there were only a handful of us in the class, and we only went to the class when our normal class was learning math/science/how to fucking read.
every year, more kids scored in. by second grade there were a dozen kids in the class, and by third grade we had a little squad.

we only went to the "gifted" class when we were learning subject of intelligence. i remember walking back into my normal class, and they would still be learning math that was ridiculously fucking easy for "gifted" kids.

See this is how I know. GATE was focused on math capabilities at first, but my wife's son reads good, that counts too! If he's not doing algebra by the first grade he shouldn't have been in the program. That's how they tested me. I also was able to read but they didn't care about that. Shame the standards were lowered.

Actually I think this guy is the closest to the truth. After having seen how bungled public school systems are and how greedy the fucking retards that manage them are, I can easily see the GATE program as a way for them to remove outliers from class averages and fuck with test numbers (in order to get more money for their district).

I think the closest thing I had to GATE was a speech therapy class.

Where I was GATE was basically a way for the people who couldn’t afford private school but still had enough to afford to separate their children from normal kids.

Basically rich but not quite rich enough. It wasn’t really for the gifted. Just for some parents willing to pay to feel their kid was. And of course to not make it so obvious they threw in the two poorest kids and a couple regular joe’s or teacher’s kids.

All the kids in that class went absolutely nowhere aside from the hot girls in them that married into more money.

I was in GATE since like 5th grade to senior year. We went on a field trip in 8th grade that normal kids couldnt go on. Also in highschool i was the only white kid in my age group in gate (at least the other kids that i would go to sepwrate class were all smart asian kids) not ADD autists

Mine was a mashup of 3 different school names. We had a Huge school dist with low population. I had to ride a bus with HS kids for 2 hours just to get there. NOW THAT was the real education for a 6year old.

I was in a gifted and talented program as a youth, but I do not know if it was specifically associated with GATE.

I'm originally from the US, but am now studying medicine in Serbia. Back when I was in elementary school in the US we didn't have GATE. What we had was MILE. I don't remember what it was for. All the smart kids were given the opportunity to join if they passed some tests. The classes were more advanced and often challenged us to do outside the box thinking and fun projects. The first time I took the test I had did well, but didn't do good enough on the Creative portion of the test. On the Creative part of the test they would give use a few lines or scribbles and we had to use our imagination to make it into something more creative. The next year I had another opportunity to do the tests again. I passed and made it into the program. It was nice desu. The regular classes had a lot of annoying Basketball Americans. The MILE classes had one or maybe two at most and they were chill and civil. We never had to go in a separate building or trailer. The windows weren't covered and the room wasn't dimly lit. Nothing bizarre ever happened. The lady who taught us was really nice. Overall I enjoyed the experience.
