This happened with William O Douglas. He had a stroke that left him paralyzed and incapacitated. He refused to step down by the other Justices demanded he resign and he caved under pressure. He was also one of the most Leftist Justices in the Court's history.
Whether or not the Left Wing of the Court would act with the same level of integrity as the 1970s is anyone's guess.
Also, Justices can be impeached as I posted before. (((Abe Fortas))) resigned as he was likely to be convicted for corruption.

If she retires in 2019, or any other member on the court does, the Dems will invoke the "Biden" rule--- no nominations to the Supreme Court in the last 2 years of a presidential term. Since the Republicans stood on that so recently, there is no way the Dems will pass up the chance to do so as well. So that seat will stay empty until after the 2020 election. That is why there was such a big deal about getting Brett onto the court before the end of the year. Otherwise, Dems could block the seat until the next presidential election same as the GOP did during Obama's last year and a half.
