I grew up in Detroit, just south of 8 mile on the west side. It took until 1991 before there was a crime committed in my neighborhood (a bunch of cars got broken into one night and the radios were stolen, including mine). No crack sales, no hookers wandering around. If you wanted to see that you had to go up to 8 mile and head east past Woodward and you might have seen one or two random hookers at 1-2am, but you really had to go past I-75 on 8 mile to see a lot of them. If you wanted to see dope dealers and baseheads you had to hit up Highaland Park or go deep over by Warren Ave and I-96 or over by Tiger Stadium late at night.

Back then I was into programming and electronics hardcore and loved every minute of it 'cause there were NO normies. Going to meetings for the local Atari user groups were full of people like me. We spoke face-to-face and gave each other tips on how to do whatever we were trying to accomplish.

I had a TS1000 and an Atari 800XL back then, and got an Atari 520ST around '87. I spent my allowances and burger flipping money at Radio Shack buying all manner of components, and buying Compute!, Antic, Analog, and Radio Electronics magazines. I had an etching tank and breadboards all over the place. Shit was cash.

I had a Vectrex, Atari VCS (6 switches w/wood grain), and an NES along with the fuckton of games I had for my computers. We had a basketball rim on the garage with no HOA fucking with us about it. I rode my BMX bike all over the place until I got my first car ('81 Escort bitchez!!!). Back then gas was 89 cents a gallon, 79 cents if you slummed it and bought 86 octane from Sunoco. I made $3.50/hr flipping burgers in high school 20 hrs a week, enough to feed my electronics and computing habit, buy new sneakers every few months, and cop the latest hip hop and techno records on Tuesdays.
