I think the common denominator would be having a broken or fucked up childhood. Early trauma be it emotional, or mental, is likely to manifest itself later in life. That's why people who were abused as young boys are more likely to grow up and beat their kids and wives. It's also why people who were molested as children are more likely to grow up to be pedophiles. People with alcoholic parents are more likely to grow up to be drunks, and people with fucking crazy parents are more likely to grow up to be nuts.
