Fun fact: the Spanish inquisition was unbelievably merciful compared to the common courts back in the day. They demanded actual proofs for a crime, something that wasn't needed in the courts. They were much fairer than everyone else. They used torture very infrequently, something that was common in all other European courts. Torture was also not meant to be used for more than 15 minutes, and with no threat to life or limb.
Only 0.1% of people tried were executed, and this was done by the state, not the church. And all those inventive torture devices like iron maidens and pears of anguish are created afterwards as propaganda pieces.

It's insanely hypocritical for a Christian nation to practice any kind of torture, when you think about it. Jesus was tortured to death. His symbolic assumption of the sins of the world is represented as a cruel and unusual execution. The whole subtext Christian texts is that torture is the very apex of human depravity, the cross is meant to symbolize Christ's victory over that depravity. And yet here you have Christian nations just going on torturing people like the Pagans before them, not even getting what their supposed religion is about.
