Get into a union. I made about $50, 000 a year with not including over and double time, plus extremely good benefits in the Ironworkers union. I live in a very poor Southern state also, in a incredibly economically depressed city. Average wages here probably hover around 12-15 dollars an hour. With over and double time I could make about 100k a year. If you live on either of the coasts you can probably double that amount.
