I remember going on holiday in Salou in about 1983 and seeing a goat herder walk his goats back and forth each day. Spain was literally a third world / less developed country just a short while back. I'm not so sure these markers are always as relevant as they sometimes seem. Carthage is considered to be a Phoenician colony but it just so happens to be located in the exact area Plato says was the center of Gadeiras rule, the long strip of what was an island leading towards the original Pillars of Heracles. Anyone who is a fluent English speaker, especially if you only speak English, should learn Spanish.
Gain access to dozens of countries and hundreds of millions of speakers. Not to mention, unlike Germanic languages, Romance languages are sexy and will get you laid. Especially with Nordic women.
DO NOT, and I repeat DO NOT learn Latin American Spanish. European Spanish is cleaner and usually the speaker is more educated (so you will learn a higher version of the language). In parts of Latin America Spanish is used really badly because it's a really flexible language, so they mix it with Portuguese/Engilsh/even indigenous languages.
In a small Castilian town, you will learn the purest and richest form of Spanish that exists that will gain respect from every Spanish speaker.
