I read some pretty detailed testimony once from an aid-worker in Africa.

The idea of conquering that did in the natives is a false narrative. The native Americans were nomadic hunter gatherers never spending more then a few months in any given region spanning hundreds of miles. They had no "property laws" carrying what they possessed on their backs. When settlers arrived, the British property laws were essentially "use it or lose it", and since the Europeans had more advance agricultural methods, they could live year around in one area expanding, while the natives constantly moved around.
