The Romans killed him, because the Jews were forbidden to do it, under Roman law. If that prohibition hadn't been in place, they would have stoned him to death, or some other method. If you believe the stories, that is, I don't. But the origin story does make some sense - the Rabbis wanted Jesus dead, because he was questioning and attacking their base of power, and they sent him to the Romans to be executed, on purpose.

I won't go further, because to me, Jesus is a figure like Robin Hood - someone of that name may have existed, but all we really know is myths and legends, no historical records or proof exist.
