Good advice. Struggling to keep motivated but it's all worth it, every mile run and every weight lifted. Most of being a soldier is walking with a shitload of gear. If you're just defending your hometown or something it's a bit different. Being fit is definitely a good thing for something like the US Civil War which had traditional tactics like invading and taking towns, cities and strategic locations. But I don't think a modern civil war would be the same thing.
