Two years ago I would have said this was a meme, but their bread and butter, Search, is failing too. Like there was a time when you'd reverse image search and ALWAYS get the source. You search for text and get relevant results. Now? Whatever changes they've made to their algorithms or machine learning memes have made it to you're lucky to get anything. I went from using duckduckgo out of principle to using duckduckgo because it unironically gives the best results.

Google Search has been going downhill for years. Part of it is downranking things they don't like (such as tools that can be used for piracy, conservative news sources,etc), part of it is them mixing more randomness in early on, so that only the first half page is relevant, part of it is the "semantic web" garbage where they pretend they can understand what you're asking and guess at an answer, part is that they now disrespect quotation marks and other advanced abilities, and part is no doubt factors unknown to us. But sadly, Google and Bing are the only significant indexers, so the end result is that there is no great search engine available.

Imagine your an old timer white guy at Google. Some software engineer who was part of the team that actually built this shit from the ground up. You're watching window licking retards just break everything and you're stuck working 10-12 hour days trying to patch it all together when life and career should be getting easier for you.

Google started as a clever application of some algorithms to figure out what the most important nodes(webpages) in a network were. There was then a 10 year battle over SEO and adding some layers around this basic tech to filter pages trying to take advantage of it. Nowadays the core algorithm is not the simple but logical one, and they are adding more and more 'fuzziness' and black box layers on top, so that the indexing is trivialized but the filtering is where all the company resources go. This is also why when you search for something, it feels like the results are all 'muddy', with things getting fast-tracked into google approved pathways when possible (ie embedding wikipedia info at the top of search results), and non google-approved paths being much worse than a decade ago when the user would be expected to do some research themselves.

Conveniently, those filters were extremely useful in the last couple years when there was suddenly a cultural push to eliminate certain kinds of thought.

There's just no alternative tho. Bing is getting noticeably worse as well, but it's not as bad as Google.

Fascinating how we've reached peak tech and shit is just going to decline from here. Everyone's going to latch onto the white mans source code like it's fucking divine.

Look at how spread out the words are in those articles in the results. There's no conciseness at all. Google 5 years ago would have given you the result which had those keywords closest together, because clearly the string you entered is part of an actual sentence and not just a bunch of random words.
