There is no right way to diet. It’s fine to starve your body of calories so long as you get the nutrients you need, but you would probably be miserable depending on the calories deficit you are working with.

I do protein shakes in conjunction with workouts but primarily eat a high protein, high vegetable dinner. I'm not even particularly maniacal about carbs (and I enjoy dessert on occasion), but I've been lean and muscular (5'11, 160) without too much effort, and I'm in my 30's.

I think the kicker is overall calories: by limiting myself to one meal a day I really can't consume more than 1,000-1,500 a day unless I'm really trying to indulge. I don't even get hungry during the day.

I eat once a day, dinner, so it's a 24 hour fast every day basically. Generally do a protein shake after lifting. Will occasionally do longer fasts of 48 hours (for religious purposes).
