You'd win the war but the guerilla conflicts would go on forever. The blacks would also have support of other African nations and even Western powers, possibly also China and they would be able to retreat north into the bush when pushed back and then perform raids until the whites either get tired and leave the Transvaal and head west or they breed you out. Whites would keep the arid Cape but the blacks would keep the northeast, which is where all the good farmland is unfortunately. Then you've got the Coloureds left to deal with, and you should hope they don't end up allying with the blacks and causing trouble in the Cape as well.

It's the same reason Rhodesia lost. They won the battles easily, but the constant guerilla raids from the bush and foreign intervention got tiresome. The whites had nowhere to retreat to, so they just moved to SA to hold tight with the Boers and Anglos, Oz or the UK. South Africa would probably be the same, you'd win the battles and survive the war, but would it be worth it? Now you're true Africans, fighting forever for no reason.

If you're rich here there's not much reason to leave since then you can afford good security. If you're middle class you're usually vested in a good job here and have no prospect of just plopping down in London and finding a job or being able to afford a house. Think a bank did an extensive survey and found that something like only 5% of whites can actually jump onto a plane and leave if they wanted to, the rest of the 4.5 million are stuck here for better or for worse.

Look at Boko Haram in Nigeria. Muslims pushed to the northeastern edge of the country in the bush who should have starved or died long ago, but they keep breeding, taking slaves, surviving off basic grains and goat meat and performing suicide bombings on nearby markets and performing raids that kill hundreds at a time. The combined Nigerian, Cameroonian and Chadian armies have been fighting them for years for now, with no end in sight. Many do die young, sometimes even starve, or just slaughtered by the army or each other, but not without breeding and taking plenty of other lives first. If a civil war breaks out in SA, you'll just get dragged into the low standards of the rest of Africa. That's what's to fear from a civil war, not losing.

Now now, but if a civil war broke out and the coloureds didn't feel like they were being accepted as allies or even equals by the whites while the blacks try to encourage them to join their side against "oppression", it could go either way.

Yeah things to take into account; Rhodesia was 300k whites vs millions of blacks. In South Africa it's 4.5 million whites, 4.6 million coloureds, 1.2 million Indians at the bargaining end of 45 million blacks. Yeah ratio is only slightly better, but it's harder to wreck a sizable minority that numbers in the millions than one that's only a couple hundred thousand.

People forget Zimbabwe has always been very unurbanised so people could fall back in subsistence farming to avoid starving entirely. However, 2/3 of South Africa's population lives in cities and that's 10s of millions of people that need to be fed once the economy goes to shit so things can't be imported and once farms stop producing.
