Army ditches 5.56mm for larger, more penetrating round

They Army will be ditching NATO 5.56mm rounds in use since the 60's for a slightly larger and more penetrating 6.8mm round. They feel the round is the right size between 5.56 and 7.62 to better be able to penetrate body armor future foes may wear. The round will also be longer range and in the supersonic zone much longer, allowing penetration at 2,000 meters. Disadvantages are the Army will have to supply itself, Other NATO countries and services will continue to use 5.56. What is /pol's reaction to this?

The army should ditch NATO entirely. Literally bury them in a ditch.

>ditching NATO 5.56mm rounds in use since the 60's for a slightly larger and more penetrating 6.8mm round
hopefully it's a smooth transition.
rejoice!
that means modded ar's to fire 5.56 with no military penalty.

>6.8mm
Good, 5.56 is a faggot round

If true, it sounds like a fuckton of money for whoever gets contracted to manufacture it.

I say fuck yeah more American made products that generate more American business
We don't need to rely on Europe for fucking ammo of all things, could even lead to the people having access to higher quality ammo to boot

Attached: 1530075045600.jpg (949x448, 274K)

Sounds like a good time to invest in domestic ammo manufacturers.

What's the weight difference between the two cartridges?
Will soldiers still be able to carry a sufficient quantity of ammunition?

Remington is making the ammo and several other companies are making 2 prototype weapons each.

Good move the nato round is a faggot round, might as well use .22.

lel

This

Also AR ammo gets stupid cheap

The US Army found the 5.56mm varmint round was only good at killing small rodents in Iraq and Afghanistan. They had to rely on light machine guns chambered for the 7.62x51mm round to take down determined Jihadi’s and to achieve the penetration of cover as you would experience in urban combat, it’s a good move.

Who cares? I'll still be using .303

dont you just need a different barrel? same mag, same bolt and carrier, same gun except barrel...perhaps im wrong.

What's wrong with 7.62?

I declare you chief leaf for your mindblowingly awful posting habits.

yes.
before the standard load out was a metric fuckton, now it's an imperial fuckton.

.303 British is a bad round, very slow. Also killed Germans so its evil, the butter knife is the supreme weapon.

that bitch has never written an accurate article in her life. she must suck cock like a hoover

Russia was right about the 7.62 just chamber to that or an 8mm

You faggots will bow to me, I own the rake.

7.62x51? 7.62x39? 7.62x54R?

not gonna happen, ever.

>hurr 5.56 is shit!!!
yeah, 5.56 is so shit that both Russia and China copied it for their main service rifles. can you fudds and noguns Eurocucks please NEVER speak about firearms, you only embarass yourselves

Attached: 1516293247153.jpg (640x480, 106K)

The article says the mass is too large and not enough propellant.

those bullets are small. Back in the 1970's when I was in the Navy Seals we used to shot bullets twice as big, until our CO chewed are asses out

7.5 Swiss is still the most perfect

looks like all the retarded amerifats are starting to realise those "meme cartridges" actually do provide much better ballistics

im shocked

Meanwhile towelheads btfo'd you guys with 7.62s...

How will it work on the same barrel?

Why not just go straight for superior 7.62 rounds? All cool guy armies use it already.

Attached: tiedustelijoit.jpg (533x800, 115K)

we used those back in the 80's and they were useless. Our CO was chewing our asses out after that that shit show

It's just how Government contracts/job orders work.
They're going to want to buy full, complete weapons and the millions upon millions of rounds each year. It's a contract with steady annual orders that really wont have competition to try and steal it away.

you are expecting the government to do it correctly. stop it.

looks like the military industrial complex is compromising in times of economic hardship. :^)

Oh fuck yes! I was just about to pull the trigger on an AR that used 556 for muh nato rounds, revamping to 6.8mm asap! It'll go good with my 10mm.

A fantastic decision in my humble opinion ameribros.

I don't give a fuck about your rimjobs

But muh beesting poison round

>not using FN FAL from the start

Unironically the sexiest gun of it's time and the G3 is a disease ridden skank by comparison.

Where is the economic hardship?
And it's not like Gov't spending doesn't directly expand the economy.

> All you niggers claiming we should stop using spears, let me stab you with one

.30-06 mater race reporting in. Perfect for light infantry. Better penetration than 7.62. Better ballistics. Better in every way, plus it makes you stronger when you carry lots of it.

763x39 is an intermediate cartridge like 556x45 you dumbass

I really don't understand why the Army doesn't just standardize on 6.5mm Grendel.

Everything I've read abut the Grendel says it would be the perfect replacement for the 5.56.

The whole reason for this discussion is the Taliban started attacking convoys at ranges where 5.56 couldn't reach. This precipitated the need for a round that could reach out a lot farther.

Doesn't 6.5mm Grendel accomplish this?

>Proponents assert that the Grendel is a middle ground between the 5.56×45mm NATO and the 7.62×51mm NATO. It retains greater terminal energy at extended ranges than either of these cartridges due to its higher ballistic coefficient. For example, the 123 gr (8.0 g) 6.5 Grendel has more energy and better armor penetration at 1,000 meters than the larger and heavier 147 gr (9.5 g) M80 7.62 NATO round.

Is an imperial fuckton heavier or lighter than a metric fuckton?

>cheap 5.56mm rounds will soon hit the market

>Where is the economic hardship?

all around you, goblin

>refit every single person in NATO
oh ya because NATO has soooooo much money to waste they don't know what to do with it all right?
GTFOuttahere

7.62x39 is a .30 caliber projectile. It has a shit ton more material penetration. .223 is reliant on fragmentation to be effective, which is shit in short barrels which all the military uses.

that's what I told my CO. I says "im goin' on the mission with biggest gun I can get my hands on" he chewed my ass out after that shit show. this was in 1972. Navy Seals operation gladiator

>One planet One cartridge
>.375 H&H

Wrong

All that milsurp in ammo cans, mmmm

>US deaths in the Iraq war since 2003: 4,500
>deaths to gunfire: about 25% of that 4,500, so 1,100
wow, America is finished. truly btfo. shut the fuck up leafnigger, absolutely weak shitposting

Did you at least fart in his face while he was back there?

Doesnt bother me. I can still reload with dead nato mags when shtf

2400 fps overall, just because it is not a .280 Ross doesn't mean it is not capable of being effective. .303 still has enough power to take down a Moose.

back then that shit would get you benched from the missions. My CO was a hard ass. He was a world war 1 vet. A real hard ass

About fucking time you stop being calibre fags

>Useless
>200 gr 2,460 ft/s 2,700 ft⋅lbf

heavy pig to carry for 20 miles.

You are literally wrong

Just copy the Chinese. If .300blackout can be necked in a 5.56 case then so can this. Easy transition.
>en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5.8×42mm

you're an uneducated nogunz dumbass who has no fucking clue about energy and balistics of these cartridges/projectiles. shut up.

>HURRRRRR .50AE IS LIKE .50BMG BECAUSE .50
fucking kys

G3 big trigger guard good for when have to wear gloves in russia

Nato round in this context just refers to the rounds that nato standardized

Pretty sure that will fuck up a lot of civilian ARs though.

223 is the civilian version of 5.56, but it's lower powered. I know Jow Forums is reading this and that's not super correct, but broadly speaking that's the case.

I still remember my Army drill sergeant:

>now some of you may have heard that 5.56 isn't very powerful. Privates, don't worry. Both myself and Drill Sergeant user can personally attest to the fact that this round will split a man's melon open at 300 yards.

Go home ghost

>Pretty sure that will fuck up a lot of civilian ARs though.
Wat?

Tell me how I'm wrong or you're just a sperg fanboy. I own both, but bigger is always better for general penetration. And penetration > tissue performance autism.

Why didn't you soften it up then? Talcum powder was surely around back then

BEEG BOOLET

About fucking time. 5.56 is the lol9mm of automatic ammunition.

This is bait, right? Tell me this is bait.

No, you're right. Did you expect government not to waste money though?

>close to breaking the record for longest period of economic growth
>hardship
maybe for the niggers who don't work lmao

You're wrong achmed uses aks, ameribro.
Apache helicopter < ak47

>remington
>when federal has established itself as being able to manufacture reliable rounds for lowest bidder pricing
>remington
>the same company that outsourced almost everything to mexico

I dont believe it

That's what I tried telling my CO back in 1972. he says "GET OUT OF MY FACE MILLER, YOU'RE ON LATRINE DUTY" he was a real old fashioned hard ass. He always wore his world war 1 uniform.

Most civie ARs use 5.56 anyway. .223 isn't uncommon but it's not the 'civilian' version of 5.56 in any respect. It was originally marketed as that but it never took off.

L1A1 SLRs fixed that by having the trigger guard on a hinge.

303 master race

>Tfw the fools just dropped the one type of round my armor was weak against

And now my fear of green tips eating my armor are now gone.
Better penetration my ass, my steel will soak .308s and 6.8 grendel/creedmore all day long.
Those fools upgrading the size of their cartridge just eliminated the weakness of steel armor.

Is this a larp?

afaik all AR-15s are designed to fire 5.56

>10mm
