Are people surprised by this? The economy is doing well so more people can afford to buy houses. This drives up demand which drives up price thereby shrinking the profit margin of house flipping. This is exacerbated in places like California where retarded laws make new construction extremely difficult.

Depends on one's view point. The banks where quick to make sub prime loans as they were just going to bundle and sell them off anyways. So they made, way, way too much money up for grabs for investment buyers in the first place.
That said, just because someone offers you loan doesn't mean you should take it.
That's the part that pisses me off with the whole blame the banks for everything. You're making say 50k-60k, you know damn well you have no biz owning two or even three homes as you keep trying to juggle each one to buy another.

It's not an easy thing to get into, you either need a LOT of capital (and therefore smaller margins for residential if you are contracting out the renovations), or you need to be able to professionally renovate.
I started out as a general contractor, as did most successful flippers that I know.
The vast majority of flip attempts I have seen are people who have enough money (or think they have enough money) to buy a house or two for resale. But the thing is, unless you simply get lucky or are able/willing to wait years, there's nothing for you to make money off of, it's either still worth generally what you paid for it (barring luck, or waiting and hoping), or you put work into it and make it worth more.
I made most of my money with razor thin margins, 20k-40ishk real marketable value added to the home. And out of that comes labour and materials AND the value of my own labour, and inspections, and jobs that I legally (if not technically) can not do such as electrical.
All I'm basically doing is making money off of renovation without having to adhere to the time table of a client, or having to bid on projects.
There are so many flippers who do not understand this, and who do not have the money to deal in the volume/time required to consistently make money flipping without handling the renovations themselves, or to forgo renovations entirely and simply play the market.

I blame the TV shows. For someone with no experience in building or remodeling it looks far quicker, cheaper, and easier than it is to fix up a shity house. Let alone knowing how to budget for owning multiple homes that might not sell when or for how much you want them to.

No shit... I used to work in commercial development. Some tract builders sell “rights to buy” a lot/spec house before the first tree is knocked down.. by the time the subdivision is built the price has elevated by $10-$15 thousand per lot.

I bought a home that was done by a flipper for almost twice the cost of other homes in the same neighborhood built at the same time. Going over to some of my neighbors houses I'd say it was damn well worth the money but I agree in most cases that's what flippers do. I got a new roof, kitchen with high end appliances, new tile, finished basement, two story deck, garage, new windows throughout the whole house, new doors and framing done throughout, and yes, painted

Huge infrastructure improvements and new basically everything. I made out with a pretty solid profit margin, but I also put lots of labor into it. That house is going to give the new owners several years of easy maintenance before anything bad happens, which will probably be the roof nearing EOL.
My bad assuming others would feel a sense of responsibility towards doing good work on such an important thing rather than making a quick buck on the future woes of others.
