You would have some genres that some artists would see and think "hey, I love this characteristic of this genre." and make music focusing extrmelly at this characteristic forming a new genre.
Others would get a genre and make a more popish version of it.
Others would get two genres they love and mix together to create new stuff.
There also guys that would do experimental music focusing at specific musical characteristics.
