Democrats had internal disagreements about issues of race long before that though. The Dixiecrats succeeded from the Democratic party in 1947 because Truman has spoken to NAACP about the civil rights, supported military desegregation, and a bunch of civil rights bills. Southern voters had some inertia though for some years after that.

That's the problem with the magical flip theory. It relies on the south being a fixed constant that's always racist. But the north was just as racist as the south. The south had slaves but the north didn't want any blacks at all.
The majority of democrats voted against the 1964 civil rights act. The republicans that were against it had voted for two prior civil rights acts but found the language in the 64 act might be deemed unconstitutional. The Southern Strategy was just acknowledgment that the republicans wanted Southern voters. Kennedy wouldn't support civil rights for fear of losing the southern vote. It was not until polling showed it was safe that he came around. Thus the south was changing. The parties didn't "flip". The democrats simply lost. LBJ saw the writing on the wall and devised a plan to "have those niggers voting democrat for 200 years". And that's the play the democrats have been running ever since.

Could it be possible that both parties were equally racist or possibly not racist at all but products of their time? Slavery and racism are not the same issue. India had slaves that were Indian. Not all slaves through history were black. White slaves existed as well. The largest buyer of African slaves was Brazil, not the US. They also kept slavery longer. The yanks didn't want blacks taking jobs from whites or mixing with their women. So their issue against slavery wasn't that it was racist. They were against slavery because they were racist. The democrats are the party of slaves and slavery was ended because democrats lost to the republicans. Both militarily and legislatively. No flipping occurred. The two parties didn't get together and the republicans say "hey, you know that losing strategy you guys keep running? We want it. You can have ours". Didn't happen. Democrats fucking lost and had to find a new way to enslave the blacks. So they put them on the government tit instead of outright chains.
