i think that the straight lines come from ice particles bumping into the plate, they are most likely to bump into nooks and crannies rather than into the straight line, straightening the line over time. they also float in a certain direction, giving the bumps a certain direction. there you go. shortly thinking about it as it is a common phenomenon, got your answer.
