What is the simplest way to explain that the military, post office, fire department aren't socialism just because they are paid for with taxes? I've explained the heirarchy, that those employed do not make the rules/control anything and that wealth isn't redistributed to them, rather, they are paid for their work & ability to perform the given task.

The government should do the bare minimal to protect life, liberty, property, and prosperity.
Socialism is basically living on a credit card. The bill comes due eventually. The police and firefighters are paid with real money (mostly) that is taken from your check. Social programs are usually borrowed.

Would a Fascist country be implementing Socialism with those same services? They predate Socialism.

The post office used to be, nowadays the utilities for communication should be subsidized by the state the same way instead of package delivery.
