(If you love to surf check out the coast and beaches of Portugal, though the waves may be beyond your skillset; they have some of the hugest in the world there.) I also loved many places in Greece; Athens is a big, dirty city but you ought to see the Parthenon once in your life and the museums there are excellent.

I went to London in the late 1980s, ended up spending over a year in England and Scotland, traveled to Wales several times as well. I'll never forget one new year's eve we spent in Inverness, Scotland, drinking with this dear fellow from Cornwall who would recite more poetry (from memory) the drunker he got. When we staggered outside at midnight the sky was clear as you can imagine, all that starshine falling on the new snow. Hell of a memory.
And of course we visited Paris and several other areas, including the French countryside, Greece, Hungary (stayed in Budapest for a month, very underrated place) and Norway, because my best friend and fellow traveler's father was from there. We even spent a week in the Faroe Islands, astonishing place that feels like something out of Tolkien--hauntingly beautiful and strange, a dream landscape. (Just do NOT go hiking in the fog, the islands are full of terrifying and worse, unexpected cliffs--the most sudden and sheer dropoffs I've ever seen. I had to watch it on the southern Welsh coast too, some interesting crevasses just show up out of nowhere with zero warning signs, lol. Luckily I am a very careful hiker.)
I loved Europe back then and am sorry I didn't stay longer and see more. Haven't had time, money or energy to go back often, really since then I've just gone to England once for a quick trip, and spent a few weeks in Ireland. Paris in 1989 was still a very beautiful and magical city. No wonder it holds a special and loving place in the hearts of many. I have not been back, but my friend from those old travels went back recently with his wife. I won't even tell you what they said. It's too fucking sad. You guys know anyway.
