Basically because a stage is like a zoo enclosure and you play something that isn't real, you either should take care to not make your setting seem more real than it is or play with the idea that a play's a play; there is, after all, a chance that people might identify too strongly with a given character and try the solutions they see tried in front of them even when there is a point to the contrary that they are missing (this is also where the term "Fourth Wall" comes from - if what's happening is limited to the stage and the characters are only on it, what reason is there for them to not use the fourth wall of their living room?).
