I'm not pro trophy hunting, but the alternative is worse. Imagine being a poor agricultural community whose harvest is regularly raided and completely eaten by a large herbivore; once it's developed a habit it'll keep coming back and this will encourage others. The community gets pretty annoyed and the only method their finances allow is to burn down large areas of habitat or to gas/poison large herds of animals. If you give the same community an incentive, via the selling of hunting permits, not to go apocalyptic on the animals then you've actually saved animals, habit and financially helped a community not to be so heavily reliant on the agriculture which attracts the animals in the first place.
Also cat AIDS are a real problem in Africa, so by culling big cats you're actually helping to stop spread of a disease which leads to a far more painful and horrifying death.

I don't believe you fully understand what goes on when white Americans and other westerners are hunting game in African nations. They pay extraordinary amounts of money to organizations to shoot wildlife on these preserves that are old, dying, or otherwise diseased in a way that would not be beneficial for the species if it were to procreate, animals who would otherwise just die within a year. These payments are used to assist with conservation efforts to save the remainder of the animals, because surprise surprise donations from white libtards in the west are paltry compared to their vocal complaints. These hunters shooting one old animal help more in protecting the species in the long run financially than any donation drive generally could hope to.

On top of that their meat, provided it's not tainted, will be donated to located villagers.
