The US never invaded Viet Nam. The US had a defense treaty with South Viet Nam it had to uphold once the nation was invaded by North Viet Nam. It was no different than the Korean War or a possible invasion of any NATO ally. The US army fought in South Viet Nam to protect its ally.

Vietnam ended with a cease fire. USA won pretty much every significant military encounter. Yet, a year after the ceasefire, civilian sentiment was so low about Vietnam, that when the north went against the cease-fire and re-invaded, USA didn't go back to help.

So I accept it as a "loss" because we didn't get done what we hoped to get done in the end, but I do not accept that our military "lost". Our pussy civilians and politicians gave us the loss by default, and that's too bad.

The Ho Chi Minh gained support as a legitimate nationalist defeated the French occupation forces. The French are allies of America. France asked for help, America sent help.
