Yes you have to pay it back eventually, but this can be exactly what you need to get out on your own. If you can't travel to any college to take classes, you should be able to find an online college that can offer some certificates or other easy education to get a better job (or help you start your own company).

Coast guard is really hard man. I’ve been in 2 branches, CG is honest to god the hardest one. They have -way- higher training standards, and they are literally constantly forcing you to get new certs nonstop and qualifications are literally never ending. It’s basically college nonstop. Join only if you want to be part of that legacy don’t join if you’re looking for an easy time. I’d unironically go back to the Corps if I had to pick which one were easier.

Coast guard does occasionally put people without an associates on bottom tier. Also a lot of their rates require a good score, I know several people who only qualify for BM which is NOT what you want to do, and a lot of rates are closing for years at a time. ME in particular is closed for the like the next 5 fucking years. The list is closed and there’s still a 4+ year wait for that AFTER they open it back up.
