No, this isn’t a fantasy à la “The Man in the High Castle” (Philip K. Dick’s dystopian novel in which the Nazis got the bomb first and dropped it on Washington to win World War II), but a real debate, happening in present-day Berlin.
“Do We Need the Bomb?” read the front page headline in Welt am Sonntag, one of the country’s largest Sunday newspapers.
“For the first time since 1949, the Federal Republic of Germany is no longer under the U.S.’s nuclear umbrella,” Christian Hacke, a prominent German political scientist, wrote in an essay in the paper.
I’m pretty sure the real reason why is not because of the bomb necessarily. There is huge corruption behind nuclear power and how amazing it really can be, if you give countries the ability to produce weapons with said technology, they could convert the weapon into use for the populace, ie nuclear power.

building AND maintaining them is stupidly expensive and incredibly hard to do if you have a generous welfare state. it's not at all worth it if you aren't adjacent to an aggressor. this is why why Pakistan and India have them, why Israel has them in secret and why North Korea wanted to pursue them. it would make more sense for Japan and Poland to have them than it does Germany or Italy.

We have the best uranium. No nukes or nuke power but we sell it to other countries. It's pure fuckin treason. We have enough uninhabitable land to put nuke power in places where an accident wouldn't hurt anyone but gst bucks on power bills keeps our gov pushing solar and wind as the alternative to coal power which would be cheaper if we didn't privatise power.
