It put on a huge act to get support from the Soviet Union & China after it's independence, but in reality, DPRK is closer ideologically to the 3rd reich, or Imperial Japan than it is to the soviet union. An Ultra-conservative ethnic nationalist state, against any kind of race mixing, totally opposed to liberalism, extremely conservative views on age, sexuality, gender, family, "LGBT", etc..

actual communism is just the inevitable form society will take after global socialism (worker control) has happened, because it is the logical final step to securing self interest. the dprk is a socialist state ran by a dictatorship of the proletariat, it is socialist, and communist. It created the principals of juche based on its conditions.
Socialists do not follow some rule book of how each socialist state is structured, rather it is based on a system of thought and analysis with which you can create a suitable system for the needs. This has happened numerous times, it is adaptive. In north koreas case juche was developed and it proved quite effective. They are still economically based on a foundation of marxian analysis. They are socialist.

The Kim family has replaced the Japanese emperor and they have secularized the religious aspects but they are for the most part an emulation of the Japanese Imperial government.
